Questions: Ask the Dork

23 April 11

lost in translation.

last night, my mom and i test-ran the hand-me-down washing machine from my sister.  it’s a four-year-old machine which my sister fairly used when she and her family were posted in “the kingdom” in the middle east.  they decided against shipping it to brisbane where they now live, so she pretty much bequeathed it to us.  the task required me to read through the manual since there were a bunch of buttons to push.  luckily, the manual came in two forms: arabic and english.

i breezed through most of the instructions as they were pretty straightforward until i got to this point, and i quote verbatim:

Pause Option

  • Within 5 minutes for start, it is possible to put in the laundry or take out.
  • If push Start/Pause button, the door is unlocked immediately.
  • In case of too hot or too much water in washer, the door can not be opened.
  • After closed the door, one more push Start/Pause button to made washing process going on continuously.

uh-huh.  and then, i scratched my head, read it again, and got the gist.

it was about past 10pm when we decided to wash some towels and other unmentionables.  after a full day of fasting and abstinence (for good friday), and a day blanketed by a somber mood, it was just what i needed to break the ice and have a good laugh.

introducing “gmail motion”

we’ve all heard the idiom before, “actions speak louder than words.”  here, google takes it to the next level — in this case, actions speak louder than actually typing it (in your email).  imagine if this really happened.  it would be a riot at work.

good one, google.  another hit april fool’s gag.

pardon my french!

nope, am not about to start writing in french here. with all the stress i’ve been going through with school for the past couple of days (actually, it’s more like the past 14 weeks!), the least i need right now is to complicate my life and learn a foreign language! i’ve got “quid pro quo”, “promisorry estoppel” and all that business law lingo already oozing out of my ears.

yes, i am down to my last two weeks of school and will be heading home real soon for the winter break. sooooooo excited, i can’t wait! anyway, so i decided to take a quick break from studying and entertain myself. philippe sent me this, and i seriously think they’re worth sharing.

comic relief.

am finally breaking my silence…not with updates though, but with some filipino humor. some may have already read this, but i think it’s still worth the post. i just found this email from my college buddy really hilarious!

flashback: when i got this email a few months back, i was crackin up in my room so bad, my roommates probably thought i’ve turned whacko from too much studying! there was no point explaining to them anyway, since these were tagalog jokes.

some of you may find these corny actually. i don’t know why…i think am just pining to speak my native tongue so bad, that’s why i find everything about this post funny. ever since i’ve been here, it’s been all english day-in and day-out. * not that i’m having a tough time coping with that. i’m not complaining, it’s just the way it is! * since am the only filipino in the first year (there are only two of us in school), i have zero contact with any pinoys here…save for a few phone calls to and from relatives. i don’t even get to talk to the other filipino in school ‘coz he’s in the 2nd year and we hardly see each other in school anymore. whenever i do see him, it’d always be “hey” and that would be the end of our conversation.

rest assured, am doing a-okay…except for a few (nearly) sleepless nights, a bummer accounting midterm and being perpetually school-stressed! no worries, haven’t found the need to take zoloft yet!

happy reading everyone!
